Homeodomain-interacting protein kinase 2 (HIPK2) is a serine / threonine protein kinase that exists in different organisms and locates in the nucleus and functions in conjunction with common regional transcription factors . The effect of HIPK2 on tumor cells has not been fully elucidated. The present study found that HIPK2 is involved in regulating tumor suppressor gene p53 and inducing apoptosis, and is closely related to embryogenesis and tumorigenesis. Ser46 phosphorylation of p53 has an important role in activating apoptosis programs. Down-regulation of HIPK2 in some tumors and absence of heterozygosity at chromosome 7q32-q33 suggest that HIPK2 may be a tumor suppressor gene.
