二十世纪末,一个重大的地理发现诞生在中国西藏。雅鲁藏布江下游大拐弯以全球最高、最深、最长和最险几乎同时被《吉尼斯世界纪录》和中国新华社宣布为世界大峡谷之最,1998年10月,中国国务院正式命名其为“雅鲁藏布大峡谷”。1998年8月28日,一个值得载入中国民间探险史册的日子,20多名来自全国各地的热血青年组成的“98中国雅鲁藏布江科学考察漂流探险队”在西藏拉萨布达拉宫广场宣布:“中国人将要首漂雅江!”……1998年12月9日下午3时许,这些人回到了庄严的布达拉宫广场,举起一条“雅漂胜利了”的简易横幅合影留念,宣告雅鲁藏布江科考漂流探险取得成功。他们不由自主地将队长杨勇高高抛起,此时,没有鲜花也没有哈达,来助兴的只有拉萨的几位友人和十几个茫然的围观者,只有他们自己沉浸在自己的胜利的喜悦中……
