Thin-film transistor (TFT) technology and electroluminescent (EL) thin-film technology combine to produce a large area integrated flat panel display with 20 lines per inch. Thin-film transistors, vacuum-deposited on each pixel, serve the addressing and driving functions required. In this article, we discuss the performance requirements of TFTs for displays that operate at normal TV frequencies. Focus on device uniformity and stability issues related to the reliability of the display panel. The paper shows that each pixel has a thin film capacitor and “row addressing” (one line at a time) program combination, the performance requirements of active TFT devices more appropriate. This article also addresses the long-term operating characteristics (life), stability, and reliability of TFTs used in 6 “x 6” panels. Discrete devices operate over the same signal conditions as real panels over the temperature range of 25 ° C to 100 ° C, yielding one hour of reliability data for over 100,000 devices. The results of these tests are discussed in conjunction with the circuit conditions of the composite display panel.
