张桂林的艺术历程是和中国当代丝网版画的发展历程密切相关的。作为中国丝网版画的开拓者、先行者之一,张桂林一直在丝网版画领域扮演着重要角色,并且不遗余力地致力于将丝网版画推进到公共空间。特别是上个世纪90年代以来,他在丝网版画一系列积极而又稳妥的语言探索,不仅拓展了丝网版画的审美空间和文化空间,也让我们看到了一个在艺术形式上日臻成熟与发展着的张桂林。
