《宋會要》是宋代的政書,其原本已經遺失,存世的唯有清人徐松所輯的《宋會要輯稿》。《刑法》是其中一個重要部分,是研究宋代法制及社會最重要的资料之一。可惜的是其經《永樂大典》抄録,不僅编排體例已被打亂,而且殘缺零亂、舛誤甚多。《宋會要輯稿·刑法》(以下簡稱《輯稿·刑法》)由“類”“門”“條”組成。“刑法”是類的名稱,類下有門,門下有條,條按编年排序,一條往往記述一事。《輯稿·刑法》正文有兩種
