贾岛、姚合诗风接近,生前即享盛名,并在当时诗坛形成了一个以两人为核心的诗人群体。姚、贾身后,学习、追效者依然络绎不绝。从这个意义上说,晚唐、五代是“姚、贾时代”。但在北宋至南宋前期,姚、贾声名不彰。人们提到贾岛,往往与孟郊并称“郊岛”。“永嘉四灵”步入诗坛时,我国已有成熟的流派理论。有着明确流派意识的“四灵”奉贾岛、姚合为宗,从茫茫唐诗中将姚、贾一派筛选出来作为师法对象。“四灵”之一的赵师秀通过编选《众妙集》与《二妙集》,完成了唐诗史上姚、贾诗派的首次确认。
