In many cases, especially when working in the field, gravimetric methods to determine soil moisture can be very difficult due to the short time or the inability to use a thermostatic oven. This difficulty has recently been solved by the flooding method proposed by Maiboroda. The basis for this quick field operation is that the absolute dry weight of the wet soil can be obtained by weighing in water. We measured many samples of sand and clay from the Wisconsin continent, demonstrating that the difference between the water immersion method and the standard gravimetric method did not differ by more than 1%. The flooding method requires several 125 ml Erlenmeyer flasks and several 1 inch long copper wire ends attached to a ring.
