According to Japan’s “Plastics Times” in October 1995, total chemical product sales in the world reached 1,250 billion U.S. dollars in 1993, of which 212.5 billion U.S. dollars in Japan, 387.5 billion U.S. dollars in North America, and 375 billion U.S. dollars in the European Union, accounting for the sales market respectively. 17%, 31%, and 30% constitute the three poles of the chemical industry. The petrochemical market accounts for 40% of the chemical industry product market. According to statistics in 1992, the world’s ethylene surplus was 1.2 million tons, while ASEAN, China, etc. had a gap of 6 million tons. This gap was offset by excess ethylene in Japan, North America, and South Korea.
