在宋庆龄同志病重期间,邮递员每天送往她的寓所大批慰问信件,少则百封,多则数百封.这些信来自祖国和世界的四面八方,写信的有年过九旬的老人,也有年仅六七岁的儿童.封封来信表达了他们对这位人中之杰的崇敬之情.还有不少人寄来药物和对治疗的建议.有位署名“青年工人”的人汇来二百元给她老人家增买补品.河南某地的一群少先队员把爸爸妈妈给自己的一分、二分零用钱凑在一起,寄来十九元三角三分钱作为“营养费”.成年人称她为“尊敬的名誉主席”或“敬爱的庆龄同志”,孩子们则声声叫她“亲爱的宋奶奶”.但也有人称她为“孙妈妈”和“宋大姐”,他们是在过去二十年至五十年间在不同情况下,直接受到过宋庆龄同志关怀和帮助的少年儿童,如今他们已成长为教师、工程师和国家干部,但写信时仍亲热地用旧日的称呼.本刊摘录了其中六封来信,刊登于后.
