电子计算机的出现引起了科学技术的巨大变化,同时也为语言学开辟了新的发展途径。计算机一方面对语言学提出了要求,要求用新的语言学理论来武装它的“头脑”,以发展它的智力,从而使它具有翻译能力及语义探索能力;另一方面它又成了语言学工作者的得力助手,帮助语言学工作者对语言素材分类,进行演算,控制和模拟。这些都属于机器应用语言学的范畴。在这方面,目前研究较多的是机器翻译。
