临海虽然是个山城,但毕竟靠近海边,接受西洋文化较早。还在清朝光绪年间,就有传教士开设了西医医院,初名恩泽医局,不久改名为恩泽医院,后来出售给私人医生,仍袭旧名,但老百姓却用其所在地地名和主人姓氏相称,叫作望天台陈家医院。到得民国之后,西医医院和诊所就更多了。除了恩泽之外,比较出名的还有两家,老百姓也是以其所在地和主人姓氏相称:旧仓头的汤家医院和东湖边的邵家医院。但因为都是私营的,受到资金的限制,规模较小,设备较差,医生也不多,——恩泽是父子配,汤家是兄弟行,邵家则是夫妻店。临海之有公立的大医院,始于台州医院的建立。
