The Polaris mine is located on Coronis Island in the Canadian Arctic. The shipping season is short and the climate is cold. The mine has several underground stopes, a dressing plant mounted on a punt, a concentrate storage and loading facility, a living welfare office building and a small airport. The electricity needed for the mine is provided by four 2300 kilowatt diesel generators installed on a punt. Each large motor is powered by a 4.16 kV system directly connected to each generator, with 600 V or 120 V for all other loads. The diesel power station is a total energy system with the highest energy efficiency and the highest heat recovery rate. It is expected that the waste heat recovered during the whole year will meet the needs of heating and drying process and living welfare office building heating. The diesel engine cooling system consists of two glycol-water circuits, a “cold water” circuit for cooling charge air and oil, and a “hot water” circuit for cooling the jacket water. Each circuit has several heat exchangers for waste heat recovery and outdoor forced draft radiators for excessive heat dissipation. A water circuit in the mill area transfers the heat from the jacket water circuit and the waste heat boiler to the heating equipment. The process and the exhaust gas from the heating system of the building are sent to the concentrate dryer.
