一般认为第三纪红层是代表湿热气候的沉积环境,因此有关第三纪的冰碛成因很少有报导。严尚钦等(1980)根据联合国CLIMAP计划实施证明,深海海底沉积速度缓慢,连续性强,它完整地记录了古气候的长期变化,因而采用C_(14)、古地磁、火山灰层位、古生物和氧同位素比等方法,就能测定海底沉积物的年代,就能恢复古气候的变化。通过这一工作,证明了第三纪有冰川作用存在。夏子街位于准噶尔盆地西北缘,该区下第三系古一始新统红砾山组底部砾岩具有砾石磨圆度好、砾石成分复杂、无分选性、无层理等特征,前人将其定为河流相沉积,据笔者在该区工作所获资料证明,应属冰湖一冰河相沉积。

The conglomerate at the bottom of the red gravel group of the Lower Paleocene in the Paleocene of the area is characterized by good roundness of gravel, complex gravel composition, no classification and no bedding. Set it as river sediment deposition, according to the author’s work in the area data prove that should be a glacial ice lake deposition.
