Qingdao is one of the earliest cities in China to start ocean research. In 1898, Germany set up a simple meteorological observatory in Qingdao. It was the earliest scientific research institution in Qingdao and later developed into Qingdao Observatory. In the 1930s, the Qingdao Observatory set up an ocean department, which is the earliest established marine research institution in China. In 1932, the Qingdao Oceanarium, opened as the “Museum of the Sea” called “My Country’s First”
