黄河在我国古代人口波动中起着一个特殊的作用。这个作用的形成有两个重要的原因。其一是我国古代人口过分地集中在黄河中下游及其毗邻的华北平原。其二是华北平原不但气候灾害频繁,而且黄河把我国水土流失最严重的地区-黄土高原的气候灾害带到华北平原,使得我国人口最密集的地区不得不接受两个多灾区域的气候灾害叠加的影响。其三,黄河又能将封建王朝兴盛期所蕴酿的灾害留传到衰落期,使得衰落期中除人祸之外,还要承受更多的气候灾害。
