★ Republic of Korea Amends Fisheries Law to Try to Solve Illegal Fishery Fishing The Korean Fisheries Amendment Act sharply raised the penalties for illegal fishing by raising the current maximum penalty of 5,000 U.S. dollars to a maximum of three times the catch. The amended Fisheries Act also includes some provisions on imprisonment. When an enterprise engages in illegal, unreported and unregulated fishing or abuses its crew, its government subsidy is canceled. However, Greenpeace East Asia said South Korea’s efforts are far from enough to solve the problem of illegal fishing and to ensure sustainable fisheries development requires more legislative support.
