If the plant itself has the ability to resist pests, people are bound to be pleased with the subtlety, soundness and effectiveness of this technique. Not surprisingly, this is precisely what the pesticide chemists are trying to explore. In these examples of efforts to study the emergence of nature, researchers are exploring how plants and pests, pathogens interact and trying to elucidate the complex chemical mechanisms by which plants are unaffected. Understanding the natural defense mechanisms of plants allows chemists to learn more about how to design safer and more selective new techniques for protecting crops from pests. The development of biomimetic pesticides is an ongoing and difficult but necessary research project. Due to the traditional synthetic pesticides on the higher
