Chico (American Peanut Germplasm Registration No. GP: 2) was named and distributed by the USDA Science and Education Bureau and the Agricultural Experiment stations in Georgia, Virginia and Oklahoma in August 1973. Chico was systematically bred in PI268661, a species introduced from Rhodesia in 1960. This species is native to Krasnodar in the Soviet Union and was named “No. 370 Peanut” strain. Observations and trials at the Georgia Coastal Plains Pilot Station, the Virginia Tidewater Research Center, the Oklahoma Agricultural Experiment Station, and the Beltsville Agricultural Research Center have found good traits that are commercial varieties. It is 20-30 days earlier than the earliest cultivars, with longer stalks and deeper soil. Due to its special traits, it can be used as a germplasm and genetic material to improve the early maturity of peanuts.
