“茫茫九派流中国,沉沉一线穿南北。”早在1927年春,一代伟人毛泽东便以横贯东西的自然景物——长江(“九派”)和纵穿南北的人文景物——京汉、粤汉铁路(“一线”)概括广袤的中国。显然,这里所谓的“一线”,乃是作者心往神追以凌空俯瞰之势宏观所见,有意忽略了它在武汉三镇为长江拦腰隔断之处。尽管如此,这两条铁路一建成,就堪称我国南北交通的大动脉了。
