Objective To study the changes of brainstem auditory evoked potential (BAEP) in patients with acute cerebrovascular disease. Methods 243 patients with acute cerebrovascular disease within 7 days of onset and 122 normal subjects underwent BAEP examination. Results The abnormal rate of BAEP in patients with acute cerebrovascular disease was 85.6%, significantly higher than that in normal control group (25.4%, P <0.01). The abnormal BAEP rate was 100% in patients with severe disease, compared with 79.2% and 83.7% in light and medium patients, respectively, P <0.01 compared with severe patients. BAEP abnormalities mainly manifested as the main wave latency and wave interval prolongation, the main wave disappeared or poorly differentiated. Conclusion Brainstem auditory evoked potentials can be used as an objective index to judge the prognosis of acute cerebrovascular disease and observe the changes of the disease.
