Shutter Island narrates a tragic story in which the ominous por-tents gradually erode the protagonist's confidence and even his identi-ty.It's all done through the flawless directorial command, with the reversal of the plot at the end of the movie being the most outstand-ing.When Chuck tentatively asks Teddy what the next move is,for diagnosing if Teddy is really cured, the stubbo reply of Teddy would thoroughly discourage the physician's heart as well as the au-dience's.However,what extols this movie from a mediocre one to a magnificent one is just Teddy's next and last line:whether it's better to live as a monster or die as a good man.Although as a suspense movie, the last words are open to interpretation, the inclination of the screenplay toward the point-of-view that Teddy himself is a patient on the island and that the doctors are trying to help him are out of question, and diving into the influencing circumstances within the weste world would provide the factual and theoretical evidences to show forth how the character's strengths and weaknesses works concomitantly in determining Teddy's outcome, and that what the signification of his doomed fate is.
