余象斗书商兼评者、商人兼儒生的双重身份,使他在刊刻评点《三国演义》时兼具商业目的和文人自我价值实现的需要,从而使其既带有浓重的商业气息,又具有一定的文人情怀,而两者结合使其刊刻评点更接近当时新兴市民阶层的阅读心理和价值观。商业气息渗透于小说刊刻评点的方方面面,而正是这种书坊主通俗小说商业模式开启了明清时期通俗小说蓬勃发展的新局面。作为读书士子,余象斗将“庶民教育”视为己任,借此导愚适俗、劝惩教化,倾注了浓厚的济世情怀,同时他将《三国演义》视为史外纪事、增广见识之通俗史书,而这源于其史家小说观。

As a scholar of the reading, Yu Xiangtou regarded “common people education” as his own duty, guiding him to be a cliché, persuasion and correction and devoted himself to the worldly affairs of the world. At the same time, he regarded “Romance of the Three Kingdoms” Knowledge of the popular history books, which stems from the view of the history of his novels.
