“情深爱极方能笑,优孟原来是可人。”这是中国戏曲学会副会长郭汉城为江苏省首届滑稽戏节的题诗。它既道出了滑稽戏作为“笑的艺术”的深厚内蕴,又揭示了这个年轻剧种同我们古代滑稽戏的历史渊源。近半个世纪以来活跃在江南舞台上的滑稽戏,在新时期得到很大发展和提高。在戏剧进入低谷时期,唯独它卖座不衰,成为戏剧界关注的“滑稽戏现象”。为了探讨滑稽戏的剧种源流和美学特征,总结、交流剧本创作和舞台演出的实践经验,推动滑稽戏艺术进一步的发展和提高,江苏省戏曲学会、常州市文化局和江苏省滑稽戏艺术研究会于1989年7月下旬,在江苏省常州市联合主办了江苏省首届滑稽戏节。
