Your eyes are astringent, sore muscles and chills. Body temperature rose to 100 degrees Fahrenheit. Self-diagnosis: flu; self-prescription: aspirin two, go to the next morning to see a doctor. When you open medicine cabinet to take aspirin, you may be making mistakes. Some recent studies have suggested that fever itself plays a positive role in combating the disease, while reducing body temperature instead prolongs the duration of the disease. This concept is not new, and Hippocrates, the ancient Greek physician, infers that fever can destroy the body fluids that the ancients thought were causing the disease. At the turn of the century, Roman doctors intentionally infected patients with malaria and raised their body temperature to treat syphilis and some other illnesses. The treatment was discontinued until the early twentieth century. However, in the nineteenth century, the use of aspirin to lower body temperature and relieve pain started a detriment to the “fever treatment” phenomenon. Doctors think of fever as a disease rather than as a symptom. Sir William Oslo proclaimed: “Fever is the largest and most terrible disaster for fever, famine and the three scourges of war.” The current perceptions about fever are rooted in the rational evolutionary theory that prevails among biologists today . This view considers any
