In the past 20 years, many computational procedures have been established to assist doctors in the diagnosis and treatment of various diseases. However, the medical accuracy of these procedures has not been clinically evaluated by experts in various fields. This article describes a computer-aided consultation system MYCIN. The extensive database of consultation systems and procedures for selecting treatment options have been established by epidemiologists, clinical pharmacologists and computer scientists in the past five years. Its mission is complex, often in the absence of antibiotic information, to decide whether a patient needs treatment and how to treat it. In choosing which antibiotic, MYCIN should take into account the specific clinical conditions (such as trauma, neurosurgery), the patient’s various factors (such as age, immunosuppression) and the possible presence of unusual pathogens (eg, non-
