金克木是我国著名文学家、翻译家、学者,和季羡林、张中行、邓广铭一起被称为“燕园四老”。他的学历很低,不过是小学毕业而已。在北大图书馆当馆员时,他利用一切机会博览群书,广为拜师,勤奋自学。才华出众的他,精通梵语、巴利语、印地语、乌尔都语、世界语、英语、法语、德语等多种外国语言文字。他曾仅靠一部词典,一本凯撒的《高卢战纪》,就学会了非常复杂的拉丁文。他的日语也很不错。除了在梵语文学和印度文化研究方面颇有心得之外,在中外文化交流史、佛学、美学、比较文学、翻译等方面也颇有建树。
Jinke Mu is a famous writer, translator and scholar in China, and Ji Xianlin, Zhang Zhongxing and Deng Guangming together are called “Four Immortals in Yan Yuan”. His education is very low, but only primary school. When he was a librarian at Peking University Library, he took advantage of all opportunities to read the books and was widely apprenticed and self-taught. He is talented, proficient in Sanskrit, Pali, Hindi, Urdu, Esperanto, English, French, German and other foreign languages. He used to rely on a dictionary, a Caesar’s “Gallic war,” learned a very complex Latin. His Japanese is also very good. Apart from his experience in Sanskrit and Hindi cultural studies, he has also made considerable achievements in the history of Chinese and foreign cultural exchanges, Buddhism, aesthetics, comparative literature and translation.
