In order to economically develop several fringe gas fields in the southern part of the North Sea, it is necessary to share the gas pipeline with other collaborators. Therefore, accurate measurement before gas mixing is necessary. Conventional orifice flow metering requires that the gas be dry gas, so expensive separation equipment is required and therefore development of such gas fields is uneconomical. An alternative method can save a lot of money by developing the field. This is done by first installing a venturi meter to measure the amount of moisture in each well and then summing the gas readings for each well to give a total uncertainty of around 1% similar to a conventional trade metering station. For a typical gas field, this method can be compared with the separator measurement, the former savings of 20 million pounds. This article discusses the design of measurement systems, application practices, and evaluation of measurement uncertainty.
