Both Elizabeth by Jane Austen and Gu Manlu by Eileen Chang are very independent women, yet the two have quite different fates: the former is fortunate enough to be married to his prince charming, who is tortured to death. Their different fates stem from the social background of the time and the different life experience and family environment of the two women writers. Jane Austen is more optimistic; while Ailing is more pessimistic.
