In the early 1950s, the editors of Happiness magazine compiled a list of top-tier U.S. companies based on sales for internal use. It was not long before someone got a good idea and published the list, so it was published in the July 1955 issue of Fortune magazine as a companion to the Fortune 500’s “Guide to the Largest Industrial Company in the United States.”
