Seven years ago, the use of satellites to provide accurate surface coordinates and elevation data for seismic exploration was something new in the field of oil and gas exploration and gratifying results have been achieved with the new technology. According to statistics, since 1984, the Sichuan Exploration Area has introduced and used satellite locator to engage in exploration. By the end of 1990, a total of 780 satellite positioning points had been counted and 73 were made by the end of August this year. Its measured effective value for direct exploration and production is more than double that of conventional surveying, accounting for about 1/4 of the total number of surveying sites required for seismic exploration in the area.
