1935年10月,正当陕北根据地“左”倾错误领导人在党内狂热推行“肃反”的危急时刻,毛主席率领的中央红军长征到达陕北的吴起镇,与红十五军团胜利会师。这时,陕北根据地的形势十分严峻,“肃反”已错杀了200多革命同志,陕北红军主要创始人之一刘志丹等同志正在狱中受审。党中央和毛主席一到陕北下寺湾,就立即下达“停止捕人”“刀下留人”的指示,并以王首道、贾拓夫、刘向三等组成工作团,带领一个连火速赶往瓦窑堡,营救正待处决的刘志丹等一批革命同志。
