Telomeres are unique protein-DNA structures at the ends of chromosomes that play an important role in protecting the integrity of the chromosome and in maintaining the cell’s ability to replicate. Telomerase is a special reverse transcriptase consisting of RNA and protein subunits that extends telomeres. Changes in telomere length and telomerase activity are closely related to cellular senescence and carcinogenesis. The study of telomerase-specific inhibitors in the treatment of cancer chemotherapy has broad prospects.
