Intersection of East and West Europe Vienna is the capital of Austria. A long time ago, the Romans built numerous castles here when they entered the Danube. From the thirteenth century to the nineteenth century, a few centuries ago, it was the capital of the Habsburgs and one of Europe’s most famous capitals. In 1938 Hitler Germany invaded Austria. Austria lost its position of independence and was dragged into the Second World War launched by Nazi Germany. The consequent decline in its position in Vienna amounts to only one provincial capital. During the Great War, especially in 1944, as much as 20% of the city’s buildings were blown up due to the fierce fighting on 53rd aircraft bombing and liberation, almost all of the bridges across the Danube were also exploded. There are numerous bullets on the wall, rubble everywhere and many cultural and artistic monuments have been severely damaged. Until the Soviet occupation of Vienna on April 13, 1945, Austria was acquired
