我从小生活在新西兰,1927年随一艘澳大利亚轮船到上海,从此留居中国。我一生主要生活在新西兰和中国,这使我了解到两种不同的文字制度:新西兰使用的是拼音文字,中国使用的是意音文字。把两种文字加以比较,我感到拼音文字简便易学,应用方便;而汉字难学难写,应用不太方便。中国在清末有不少人主张汉字改革,三十年代又有人搞拉丁化新文字。我也很热心搞拉丁化新
I grew up in New Zealand, in 1927 with an Australian ship to Shanghai, since the stay in China. My life mainly in New Zealand and China led me to understand two different writing systems: New Zealand uses pinyin texts and China uses Italian texts. To compare the two languages, I feel that Pinyin texts are easy to learn and use, while Chinese characters are difficult to learn and hard to write, and their application is not very convenient. In the late Qing Dynasty, many people advocated the reform of Chinese characters. In the 1930s, some people engaged in Latinization. I am also very enthusiastic about Latinization
