Kenzaburo Oe’s lengthy essay, “The Notes of Hiroshima,” chronicled his insights and reflections on several visits to Hiroshima. In this work, Oe focused on the aftermath of the atomic bombings and described the tragedy in which Hiroshima is still being staged after the war. Starting from the victim’s position, Oe solemnly criticized the U.S. military for launching the atomic bomb and advocated the complete abandonment of nuclear weapons and put forward the peace proposition of opposing nuclear weapons and building a nuclear-free world. Oki’s anti-nuclear ideology has a positive meaning both at the time and today. However, due to the limitation of the national standpoint, its anti-nuclear ideology poses many limitations. Such as emphasizing the victimization of Hiroshima and ignoring the root causes of the tragedy on Hiroshima, diluting Japan’s liability for harm; blindly opposing nuclear war and not opposing conventional war.
