东京的文化部门曾派出一些诗歌专家,深入全国各地去采集民歌民谣。当他们来到位于日本海沟的小笠原群岛时,发现当地居民到处流行的有些歌曲,其唱词既非日本语言,又非本地土话。询问居民,居民也并不懂得唱词的含义。再则,其曲调也与日本传统迥然不同。后经语言学家鉴定,这些歌词原来是德文的。但是它是怎么从遥远的欧洲传到太平洋这些小岛上来的呢?这还是个谜。一种推测认为,在上世纪后半叶欧洲的捕鲸者把这些歌带了来;
Tokyo’s cultural department sent some poetry experts and went all over the country to collect folk songs. When they came to the Ogasawara Islands in the trench of Japan, they found some songs popular with local residents. Their lyrics were neither Japanese nor local.
