鄂温克自治旗位于大兴安岭西麓,呼伦贝尔大草原东南部,成立于1958年,是全国三个少数民族自治旗之一。自治旗以鄂温克族为主体,由蒙古族、汉族、达斡尔族等24个民族组成,总人口14.7万人。全旗辖4个镇、5个苏木、1个民族乡、44个嘎查、15个社区,总面积19111平方公里。鄂温克旗是典型的原生态地区,境内森林、草原、湖泊基本保持原始风貌。全旗草原面积12700平方公里,占全旗总面积的66.5%;林地面积6470平方公里,占全旗总面积的34.7%,森林覆盖率33%,有全国最大的樟子松母树林基地;境内有大小河流263条,大小湖泊
