The United States Kayex Joint Research Center (Rochester, NY) reports that it has succeeded in producing silicon crystals 6 inches (15 centimeters) in diameter, 27 inches (68 centimeters) long and weighing 27 kilos (60 pounds). The crystal is manufactured by the Kharkix Hamco branch in the CG2000RC crystal growth furnace. The crystal utilizes a cable-style seed-pulling mechanism and automatic diameter-control technology to enable dislocation-free growth along its entire length. The manufacturer reported that making the crystal into a solar cell produces 2,200 watts of power under sunlight, enough to power an average home.
