Objective To observe the change of lymphocyte micronucleus frequency of radiation workers under the effect of small doses of external irradiation, and to evaluate the effect of occupational exposure on the cytogenetics of radiation workers. Methods The micronucleus rate of binuclear lymphocytes in 611 radiation workers and 60 healthy volunteers was determined by the cytokinin-blockade micronucleus test (CB-MNT). Results The frequency of lymphocyte micronuclei in radiation workers (6.99 ‰) was significantly higher than that in control group (4.32 ‰) (u = 7.51, P <0.05). The micronucleus rate of female workers was significantly higher than that of men Statistical significance (u = 8.34, P <0.05). The micronucleus rate of radiation workers of different seniority increased with the increase of radioactive age, but there was no significant difference among different working age groups. Conclusion Long-term exposure to small doses of radiation on the health of radiation workers in the cytogenetically have some damaging effects.
