The landscape preserves layers of historical material left behind by layers of earth and underground. In appearance, space reflects a time of compaction; it is only the moment between the past and the future. Archeology reveals the material relics in historical activities, and the history of the site is manifested at different time levels. Brownfields retain material relics that exist as contaminants in soil and water and become clues to understanding past activities. The large-scale constructions (such as the material ruins) left behind on the brownfield where industrial activities took place show their industrialized and de-industrialized future. This type of venue has the potential to reshape the role of landscape architect, making it an archeologist that can both reveal the past and become a designer who can re-imagine the future of the venue. This article explores the impact of material relics and remnants on landscape design in future industrialized venues. Take the historical site of Ithaca Falls and Ithaca firearms, both culturally and historically located in the Wu Zhi Hu area of New York State, as an example to study the complicated historical landscape with material remains.
