Remember those highly charged first days? They were full of real-life tests where there was always something new to learn, and not always from a book. One of my first lessons occurred on my first day of kindergarten, when I got on the wrong bus ----as my older sister still likes to remind me.
Life's minor embarrassments do happen, and I know I can't protect my own children from them. I just try to teach them to laugh at theirs like I do at mine.
My daughter Erin started on the wrong foot in the 1st grade, at a new school where she knew no one. All the other 1st graders couldn't resist opening and closing, closing and opening their new desks. Wouldn't you know Erin would neither open nor close? She came to find out she was sitting on the wrong side!
Even getting around in a new school can be a challenge. Erin's older sister, Molly, almost missed her first lunch in junior high. The school secretary came to her rescue, arming her with the knowledge that while the gym and flex space were next door to each other, lunch was served only in the latter.
The first day sometimes has pitfalls for Mom and Dad, too. Once, I managed to stockpile(储备) Molly and Erin's school supplies as they went on sale the previous year. I thought everything was ready for the first day—oh, yeah! My victory dance was short-lived, however. After day one my ladies rushed off the bus, both worried and confused, saying “Mom, we need wide-rule not college-rule paper, and three 2-inch notebooks instead of two 3-inch ones! And for standardized testing, standardized No. 2 pencils only, please.”
Perhaps my favorite first-day memory happened the first time my two daughters went to full-day public school together, when I was understandably emotional. Erin noticed my red eyes and white smile. “You are happy and sad, huh, Mommy?” Such a sensitive girl! She added, “Just like the time when you were crying and laughing after the car stopped running on the ice and we were OK.” Well, at least I could laugh! 71. What happened to Molly the first day she went to junior high school?
A. She couldn't find her new classroom.

A. had mixed feelings when leaving her home
B. didn't want to go to full-day public school

74. What is the subject of the passage?
A. The relationship between Morn and child.
B. The first day of a new school year.
C. How to keep kids from making mistakes.

Many people have heard stories of the California gold rush during the 19thcentury, when lots of people went there in search for gold. Panning for gold has a rich and interesting history. Nowadays some people continue to pan for gold in California. Although it cannot be regarded as a method for earning income, taking on gold-panning as a hobby can give you a feeling of being in the old west and get you out into nature.
The only tool that is required to pan for gold is a gold pan. You can use a regular old flat pan, but “officially” gold pans are quite cheap so you may as well buy one that is made for the task. Most sold pans come in either plastic or medal.
Once you have your pan you will want to start practicing your gold panning technique. Panning for gold works because gold is much heavier than most rocks. To pan for gold you add rock and dirt from the bottom of a stream to your pan and then gently let water flow through the pan. The lighter-weight rocks are slowly swept away while any gold will be left behind in the pan.
To start panning for gold, first you will need to find a good location. Try checking maps of your area and old history books to find location where there were gold mines in the past. Even though most of the gold have already been removed, there are likely to be small leftovers that you can find. Once you have found an area that looks promising, look for any small stream or river where you can try out panning for gold.
Panning for gold requires patience and it may be a long time before you hit anything of value. However, it is an enjoyable hobby and provides a great opportunity to get outdoors, so don't give up too quickly. 75. What is Paragraph 3 mainly about?
A. Where to pan for gold.
B. How gold-panning works.
C. What tools are needed.
D. A promising area for panning.
76. What is the author's attitude toward modern gold-planning?
A. Opposed.
B. Indifferent
C. Positive.
D. Neutral
77. In which part of a newspaper would you probably find this article?
A. Lifestyle.
B. Health.
C. Travel.
D. Sports.

Researchers found that walking around with a forced smile and fake happiness simply leads to people feeling unhappier. So, putting a brave face on your sadness could be harmful. The research also found that women suffered more than men when pretending to be happy.
Dr. Brent Scott, who led the study, said employers should take note because forcing workers to smile when dealing with the public can result in bad outcomes. He said, “Smiling for the sake of smiling can lead to emotional tiredness, and that's bad for the organization.” He also said the research showed customer-service workers who had “fake smiles” throughout the day fell into a bad mood and didn't want to work, so their productivity dropped.
The study is one of the first of its kind to examine emotional expressions over a period of time and compare the different effects on men and women. Dr. Scott's team examined the effects of “surface acting”, or fake smiling, compared to “deep acting”, or making people smile by thinking of pleasant memories.
Dr. Scott said, “Women were harmed more by surface acting, meaning their moods worsened even more than men's. However, they were helped more by deep acting, which means their moods improved more by thinking of pleasant memories. ”
According to Dr. Scott, women tend to suffer more when pretending to be happy because they are expected to be more emotionally expressive than men. Therefore, forcing a smile while feeling down is more likely to go against their normal behavior and cause more harmful feelings.
Although deep acting can improve moods a little in the short term, Dr. Scott says, it's not a long-term solution to feeling unhappy. “There have been some suggestions that if you do this over a long period you start to feel unreal. You're trying to develop positive emotions, but at the end of the day you may not feel like yourself any more.”
78. According to the passage, Dr. Scott's study______.
A. is supported by some big employers in the USA B. is meaningful as there haven't been many similar ones
C. examined more women than men for a long time
D. aimed to make the employees more productive
79. Women suffer more from fake happiness mainly because______.
A. they usually turn up shy in public places
B. they should be more emotionally expressive
C. they are often treated in a terrible way
D. they like thinking of pleasant memories
80. It is implied in the passage that deep acting______.
A. doesn't have any effect on men
B. cannot improve our moods in any case
C. harms our feelings in the long run
D. pleases people by feeling like another person
81. What is the best title for the passage?
A. Fake smiling makes people unhappy.
B. Women shouldn't be forced to smile.
C. An important suggestion for workers.
D. Why people don't want to work.

Reader Janet Maynard has a lot of young bushes in her garden and is suffering from “watering can elbow”. So for Janet and anyone else who doesn't want to waste time, effort and water, here are my top tips for keeping plants refreshed in thirsty times.
Water in the evening if possible, rather than leaving it till you see things suffer. That way the roots can take up the water in cool soil overnight.
Violently jetting hoses(皮管)mess up the soil structure and may expose delicate roots. Use a rose(喷头)on a can. Aim low – don't waste water wetting leaves, even though they look pretty and "refreshed".
The most valuable and easily damaged plants need the most attention, such as newly planted trees, bushes and climbers. Remove any water-keeping mulch(护根物)you may have put around the base, then water it thoroughly at least two gallons, slowly. Don't aim your can rose at the stem – which we all usually tend to do. Aim the water in a wide circle so that the whole of the area under the plant is watered. You could even make a channel in the soil right around the plant so that the water is held in place as it soaks in. Replace the mulch. Repeat each week even in showery weather for the first summer.
How much water for pots? Fill up the gap between the top of the soil and the top of the pot. Let the water soak right in and then fill it again. Do this daily in hot weather for most summer potted plants.
Stand pots in saucers(垫盘)– it makes a big difference. But remember to check that the plants are not sitting in water for days on end when the weather turns wet. Roots will rot. If the fertilizer in pots really dries out, the water may get straight out of the pot without being absorbed. Correct this by standing or floatingthe pot in a bucket of deep water until it sinks and no bubbles rise.
A push-button watering can makes for more efficient watering, and recycled water bottles upside down with a needle which has a hole on the end are useful, too, for pots.
82. What does the underlined part “watering can elbow” in Paragraph 1 most probably mean?
A. A certain kind of mental disease
B. The extreme thirst for water.
C. The power of water.
D. Tiredness or pain in part of the body.
83. Which of the following statements is NOT true according to the passage?
A. It would be better to water the plant in the evening than in the morning.
B. It's necessary to water newly-planted trees once a week in the first summer.
C. Put potted plants in saucers in case the roots rot in damp weather.
D. Make sure fertilizer in the pot doesn't dry out, otherwise the water would not be fully absorbed.
84. We may easily learn from the passage that_______.
A. potted plants need to be watered every week even in rainy weather.
B. we'd better put water on the leaves and stems to keep the plants refreshed.
C. It's better to use a rose on a can to water than jetting hoses.
D. people usually don't want to waste time, effort and water in raising plants.
85. What can be the best title of this passage?
A. The importance of water in caring for plants
B. Watering tips and skills
C. How to take care of your plants
D. The relationship between plants and water
You admire a person from a distance. Popular and known, you find it frightening just to be near that person. Suddenly, this person is in front of you, smiling. How will you start a conversation?
Starting a conversation is a fear experienced by many people. Once in a situation where a person must start a conversation, he feels like hiding or vanishing into thin air. Even though how prepared a person was, words don't seem coherent(前后一致的)enough. The chance is lost forever, so never hesitate to start one.
When you start a conversation with strangers, think that they may be feeling worried, too. Being the first to start, you are the one breaking the ice. All they need to do is respond, so start the conversation on a positive note. Observe your surroundings—the people around you, the outfit, food, weather, the place itself—and find a common topic. Be friendly. Give praise sincerely. Do not be afraid to ask questions. Start with close-ended questions, so it will be easier to ask for an answer. If a positive reaction is received, then take it as a hint that the person is willing to converse with you. If at first you get a negative response, do not be blunt(直言的)about it. Act as if you did not notice it. Some people need time to get accustomed to your presence. If the answer is too negative then let go of the topic but do not respond rudely. Show that you respect their decision. Give them time to think.
After receiving a positive answer, a few more close-ended questions will be fine. Be sensitive. Observe how the response is being delivered. Show genuine interest in the answers. Listen attentively and respond accordingly. If you feel that the response is positive, you can start asking open-ended questions. Do not start topics about religion or politics. These two subjects are very controversial and arguments may arise because of conflicting ideas and perceptions.
Talk about some personal information like your favorites but do not monopolize(垄断)the time. Talking only about yourself might bore the other person. You should show that you are also interested in getting to know him better by asking relevant questions. A light and wholesome joke can lighten the mood but it must be delivered correctly as it may offend the other party.
When in a group, involve the whole group. Do not isolate a single person but when a person is speaking, look at him and give soliciting response like a nod or a smile.
Talk with confidence but do not overdo it. You might end up looking boastful(自夸的). Do not whisper with the people beside you when someone is talking. If you are knowledgeable with the subject at hand, then speak up. If you have questions, voice them out. These are the chances you should not pass to start a conversation.

C. She couldn't find the place to have lunch.

74. What is the subject of the passage?
A. The relationship between Morn and child.
B. The first day of a new school year.
C. How to keep kids from making mistakes.
D. Sweet memories at school.

A. doesn't have any effect on men
B. cannot improve our moods in any case
C. harms our feelings in the long run
D. pleases people by feeling like another person
