国名在远古的时候,人们把现今意大利南部的卡拉布利亚区叫作艾诺利亚(Enoria),或艾斯佩利亚(Esperia)或威大利亚(Vitalia);其中威大利亚的意思是:小牛生长的乐园。在漫长的岁月中,当地居民根据读音的习惯把字母“V”省略了,这样就成为Italia,即意大利亚。公元前5世纪的时候,这个名字传遍了整个亚平宁半岛。公元前6世纪,罗马共和国把亚平宁半岛正式命名为意大利亚。在英文中,Italia作Italy;中国译名是从英文转来的,所以写作“意大利”。
