1988年11月下旬,在江苏南通召开全国壁画学术讨论会期间,南通市部分企业家与参加会议的艺术家就艺术家与企业家的合作问题举行了一次极富意义的座谈会。与会的企业家们纷纷发言。亲身的实践经历使他们清楚地认识到:企业的发展,很大程度取决于职工文化艺术素质的提高。因为企业的发展取决于产品质量的优劣;产品质量则取决于制作技术与设计水平,其中产品造型设计的优劣无疑在左右销路的高低……,这些都意味着必须高度重视提高企业职工的文化艺术素质。企业家们赞助了这次全国壁画艺术学术讨论会。
