This thesis is an analysis and a demonstration of the situations of British adult and society, from the 1960s to the 1970s, conditioned by not-always-satisfactory circumstances.
This thesis consists of five parts. Part One is the introduction part, in which, I present information about Margaret Drabble, the author, and the reason for choosing Drabble s A Summer Bird-Cage, The Realms of Gold, and The Ice Age as a basis for my thesis. Part Two focuses on A Summer Bird-Cage, which concerns itself with the fate of educated young women within patriarchy, which has an important influence on the British society in the novel. Each of Parts Two, Three and Four of this thesis is divided into two sections. The latter section of each part is about the symbols in the three novels respectively. All three books are teeming with symbols. They include titles, fauna, flora, landscapes, professions and even names.
To sum up, this thesis, with the three novels representing the developing process of Margaret Drabble and with the three protagonists embodying the maturing of social beings, illustrates that the more hostile Fate and external forces become, the more sincerely we should cherish life.
