This paper brings the role of translation in foreign language teaching intoa theoretical discussion. In addition to a general introduction and a shortsummary, the paper is divided into three parts. They are the role oftranslation in the history of FLT, the role of translation in todsys FLT, and therole of translation as a course in FLT.In the introduction, the author tries to distinguish between translation asone of the teaching methods in foreign language learning and translation as acourse for the foreign language majors. They are both very important inforeign language teaching though they serve different purposes. The formeris used as an aid in foreign language learning and the latter is a necessity intraining competent foreigu language professionais. In part I, the authordiscusses the role of translation through presenting its application in differentperiods of foreign language teaching and peoples attitudes towardstranslation. Grammar-translation used to be one of the mort efficient ways inforeign language teaching. But with the development of the economy, peoplein different countries began to contact each other more frequently. As a resultother teaching methods were introduced and translation was rejected as itsdefect in oral expression. But the role of translation is re-evaluated in recentyears. The re-appraisal of translation as the oldest teaching method shows thattranslation remains a useful method. In pert Ⅱ, the author points out thattranslation is not ouly necessary, but also important. She takes Englishteaching in China for example and gives reasons why translation is necessaryin China. She regards the aim of English learning, the environment of Englishlearning and the quality of the English teachers as the elements which maketranslation necessary in China. She also points out that the application of onemethod in foreign language teaching is insufficient because the students arerequired to be competent in five basic skills. The author also discusses theimportance of translation by stating that translating is understanding; its ameans of testing which cant be substituted. In part Ⅲ, the author turns fromthe discussion of the role of translation as a teaching method to translation asa course. The earliect foreign language schools in China were actually fortranslation purpose. Translation as a course at that time was to translate booksof all kinds. After that, more and more people began to learn foreignlanguages. Now due to the development of the society, more and moreforeign language professionals are required in different fields, and translationcourse becomes more and more important. Almort all the colleges anddepartments of foreign languages have translation course for the foreignlanguage majors. But translation as a course faces problems. More oftranslation theory and techniques are discussed while less attention is paid totranslation teaching. In order to make translation course more pragmatic andserve the needs of competent foreign language professionals, translationcourse needs reform, especially on the teaching method, the textbook, and theteaching staff. In the paper, the author not only points out the problems, butalso suggests the solutions. In the short summary, the author again poinis out that translation is reallyvery important in foreign language teaching. If more attention can be paid tothe reform of translation course, translation will play an even more imponantrole in foreign language teaching.
