Facial emotional clues and cultural difference are very important for the intention ofintercultural communication. The present study investigated the influence of emotionalexpression on cross-culture communication and cultural difference of expressive emotionperception. The current study hypothesized that facial emotional cues as well as culturaldifference can cause the intention (approach-avoid) of intercultural communication and thatthere are cultural differences while judging facial emotions based on several factors.Three kindsof behavioral experiments have conducted to support the hypothesis.Totally 90 subjects fromthree different cultures (Chinese, European, African) participated on the behavioral experiments.Participants viewed characters varying in terms of culture, gender, facial expression, tone of thevoice and gaze interaction. The results showed that European culture was the most approachableone and Chinese culture was the least approachable one.Happy facial and vocal expressionswere judged much more approachable compare with angry expressions. The results alsoinvestigated how expressive emotion judgment varied between cultures under the influence ofculture, facial expression, tone of the voice and gender. Our results are the first to demonstratethe influence of expressive emotion on the intention of cross-cultural communication.
