The majority of chemical notification schemes rely heavily on approaches originally designed to assess single substances and crop protection chemicals in particular. In addition many of the tests used to assess environmental hazard were also designed to assess single chemicals. This raises considerable challenges when trying to identify the hazards and notify complex substances such as UVCBs (Unknown, of Variable Composition, or of Biological Origin). These challenges increase for many substances which include poorly soluble components and are acknowledged by the OECD to be difficult to test substances. In this presentation an overview of how such challenges can be mitigated by using alternative test methods and building weight of evidence approaches to help inform on the PBT (persistence, bioaccumulation and toxicity) of UVCBs.Some examples of approaches taken will be presented and the data discussed in the context of not just hazard and risk assessment but also their acceptability to regulatory authorities.
