Shallow lakes can have alternative states during a range of nutrient concentrations.Various alternative regimes have been well-studied.Among them, cyclic shifts between alternative states occur naturally in some cases, especially Lake Botshol, the Netherlands.Mechanism models of this cyclic behavior have been applied in Lake Baiyangdian, largest shallow lake in Northern China.Implications in shallow lake ecosystem protection and restoration have been presented.
