The Chemistry between the Male and the Female in Plants

　　In flowering plants, guided pollen tube growth into the micropyle of the ovule is necessary for successful fertilization.The guidance in this process mainly involves signals secreted from ovule (female), pollen receptors perceiving the signals (male) and signal transduction after the signal is perceived (male).A group of peptides have been reported as the signals in Torenia, but in Arabidopsis the nature of the signals are not clear yet.Neither are the receptors.Here, we, using RNA-seq and biochemical and genetic approaches, identified two peptides, four receptor-like kinases and one E3 ligase as the essential components involved in pollen tube guidance control in Arabidopsis.Our results suggest that the signal-receptor recognition and the signal attenuation in the pollen are much more sophisticated than we expected and that the male-female interaction is not in a one signal-one receptor manner.
