Peripheral arterial disease (PAD) is a circulatory problem in which narrowed arteries reduce blood flow to the limbs.Diminished blood flow could cause claudicating, severe pain and limb loss.Endovascular treatment of PAD has emerged as an alternate to the traditional vascular surgery.Evaluation of the new endovascular devices in pre-clinical models and correlation the results with clinical data is critical in development of new treatment strategies.Angiography, Computed Tomography and Optical Computed Tomography were utilized for analysis of deformations in the native and stented iliofemoral porcine arteries with hind legs in straight and flexed positions.Stent deformities data from clinical observations were used for comparison. The arterial segments of the animal model were matched to the human arterial segments with similar biomechanical forces.Evaluation of new endovascular devices in the clinically relevant conditions is critical for successful use of the devices for treatment of PAD.
